Check Whether a Dropbox Link Has Expired

2 min readPractical guide

If a Dropbox link is time-limited or has been disabled, a recipient can receive a URL that no longer opens the intended file. Check the link before sending it and look for explicit expiration, disabled-link, or access-denied signals.

Expiration is different from permission

A recipient can have the right account and still fail to open a link that is no longer valid. Conversely, an active link can remain inaccessible because the recipient lacks permission. Both conditions should be checked separately.

What the checker can and cannot infer

The tool can evaluate observable responses and URL signals. It cannot guarantee a future expiration date when Dropbox does not expose that information publicly. A result should therefore distinguish confirmed evidence from inferred risk.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can a Dropbox link expire automatically?

It can, depending on the sharing controls and account features applied to that link.

Can you tell me the exact future expiration date?

Only when that information is observable from the link or response. Otherwise the tool should report uncertainty rather than invent a date.

Is an expired link the same as a deleted file?

No. A link can be invalid while the underlying file still exists.

Should I re-test links in old documents?

Yes, especially before sending or publishing those documents again.

Check the link before you send it

Paste the final share URL into Can I Share This? and review the recipient-access verdict before sending.
